Molatek + Epol = bigger and better

Effective from 1 January 2015, Molatek and Epol are now part of RCL Foods.

The process started when the mega company, RCL Foods (previously known as Rainbow Chicken and owned by Remgro)obtained Foodcorp and TSB Sugar in 2013 and 2014 respectively with the objective to establish a diversified and large scale animal feed business.

With the acquisition of TSB Sugar, RCL Foods combined two well-known and strong animal feed companies in Epol and Molatek. The feed division now forms part of the sugar and milling segment and is known as RCL Foods, Sugar & Milling (Pty) Ltd. Although these two animal feed companies have merged, their respective products are still marketed under their own brands.

The merging of the feed businesses makes it possible to market a more complete product range for almost all animal species, from beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, game and horses to broilers, layers, ostriches, pigs and aquaculture.

These feed businesses now provide molasses and grain-based products in the form of meal, liquid feed and pellets. All products are available countrywide at various retail outlets, as well as in neighbouring countries.

Preferred company

The vision states it clearly: the company will be the animal feed company of choice. They will achieve this through manufacturing superior animal feed that adds value for the farmer, with excellent service and high quality feeds, supported by outstanding technical service. In short, they are focused on value for money.

The animal feed division has factories in Malelane, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Berlin (East-London), Worcester and Rustenburg, as well as a molasses-liquid feed plant in Pongola. All factories have their own laboratories where raw materials and the final products are analysed to ensure consistent high quality. In addition, the company has a system in place enabling them to track the manufacturing date of all products leaving the factory at all times. This goes hand in hand with continuous sampling in different sections of each factory to monitor quality. In the event of a complaint, the origin of the product can easily be determined and the sample of the relevant consignment can be examined to determine the quality.

Both brands, Epol and Molatek, will now be available to the farmer via the same marketing channels, and will be sold and serviced by the same team. This enables them to provide a one-stop service for all the feed needs on the farm.

Molatek

As manufacturer and retailer of molasses-based animal feed to the ruminant industry, Molatek is currently one of the leading animal feed companies in South Africa. Our products are also sold in Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.
Product development and identified market opportunities resulted in Molatek entering into the manufacturing and marketing of a comprehensive range of lick blocks in 2011.
Molatek has its own fully-equipped laboratory where raw materials, products and animal feed are analysed to ensure that these products meet the prescribed specifications.

Molatek has two manufacturing plants situated at the TSB Malelane and Komati sugar mills. Employing customised technology and utilising batch as well as continuous mixing processes a wide range of meal-based, liquid and block type products are manufactured. Quality control points further support the technology to ensure compliance with the most stringent quality standards from start to finish.

The comprehensive range of products, developed according to the latest scientific research and stock farming needs, includes concentrates, licks and energy feeds for beef and dairy cattle, calves, sheep, goats, game, horses and ostriches.

Being part of an extremely competitive and sophisticated industry, Molatek realised early on that only highly qualified and efficient people would be able to sustain our philosophy of performance, knowledge and service for profitable stock farming. Therefore, Molatek continuously focusses on training; our sales team is technically well qualified in our products and has the knowledge and ability to contribute substantially to the profitability at farm level.

True to our slogan, “Performance, Knowledge and Service for Profitable Livestock farming”, Molatek will ensure that our products continue to play an important role in the growth, health and condition of our stock farmers’ animals.

Epol

Supported by close to a century of experience and expertise, Epol is one of the leading animal feed manufacturers in South Africa. Epol is aware that the stock farmer’s animals are his life artery, the company therefore strives to supply top quality animal feed and service so that animals can achieve their full genetic potential and farm profit can be maximised. Committed research and development, formulations and an experienced sales team ensure that the company continues to market a winning formula.

Epol’s rich history stretches as far back as 1916, when Sammy Marks registered the Vereeniging Milling Company (VMC) as a subsidiary of Vereeniging Estates Limited. In 1917, Marks together with Adolf Sacks built a maize mill in Vereeniging. This was a first in South Africa, equipped with mechanised handling facilities for bulk intake and storage of maize and the forerunner of an enterprise which was to develop into one of the leading animal feed and pet food groups in the country. After Marks’ death in 1920, Monty Ross took over the reins; after a few changes and to once again make the company profitable, Ross and Premier Milling purchased 90% of VMS from Vereeniging Estates in 1934. It was from this company that Epol eventually evolved.

The animal feed industry utilises by-products from the milling, oil and fishing industries; it is therefore vital that sound quality control be maintained. Epol houses a laboratory at each of its mills with a central reference laboratory in Hammersdale where energy and protein digestibility tests and analyses for mycotoxin contamination are conducted.

The company’s quality guarantee system enables them to trace the quality of the feed and/or premix for systematic controls in the production chain.

RCL Foods

RCL Foods began as the holding company of Rainbow and Vector. With a philosophy of ‘one company’ and the aim to establish a large-scale food industry in Africa, the company decided to diversify its business offering. In August 2013, RCL Foods acquired Foodcorp, South Africa’s third largest food producer. Shortly thereafter, the company changed its name from Rainbow Chicken Limited to RCL Foods Limited.

RCL Foods has also partnered with Zambeef Products PLC of Zambia & Senn Foods. With the acquisition of TSB Sugar in January 2014, two leading animal feed companies, namely Epol and Molatek, were also added.

The animal feed division now forms part of the sugar and milling segment and is known as RCL Foods Sugar & Milling (Pty) Ltd. At present RCL Foods offers the market leading brands and a sustainable value chain that meets the needs of the consumer and the client.
